Take your wrapping paper and ...
09.11.04 (5:22 pm)   [edit]

I hope someone with school-age kids can enlighten me on this...
I am at the mailbox when a 7-9ish year old kid approaches me and says I 'have to buy' some of their wrapping paper.
I reply "No thank you."
His mother comes up and says that "everyone in the neighborhood is buying at least 5 rolls to support the school" in a rather snide manner.
I turn around and say "I support your child going to school by paying over $5,000 a year in property taxes."
The look the woman gave me was as if I said her ass should have its own zip code. And she started railing me about 'civic responsibility' blah blah blah.
So I interrupted her and asked what the 'wrapping paper fundraiser' was for.
She mumbled: "A class trip to Rock City."
WTF?!?!?!?!

Yeah. Every now and then I get hit up for those kinds of things. Usually, like you, I decline although sometimes if I have some extra money burning a hole in my pocket, I'll go for it. I always vote to increase funding for the schools though whenever that comes up since I generally would prefer to support the schools directly rather than through some wrapping paper company that is making a profit off of a bunch of kids.

I will say this though, if someone in my neighborhood was rude enough to give me crap about not participating in their fund raiser so their kid could go on a field trip, I would be pretty mad. I might mention that I am actually supporting the community *more* than she is by willingly paying a lot of taxes for the schools (because I really do think they are important) but not actually having a child using up those services. So, when it comes to "civic responsibility" I am all input into the educational system whereas *her* family is using the services I pay for.

i hope you didn't buy any from her. I got the same thing from a neighbor too the other day. Wanting me to buy candy bars. I simply told her if its that important she should just buy all of it herself then closed the door in her face. Yeah i know i'm an asshole. But i am only rude to people after i say no politely.

I don't think you're an asshole. But when there's like 20+ kids that come to your door over a weekend all pimping the same shit...

One class is selling wrapping paper, another is doing pine straw, another is doing pumpkins.

I'm ready to put a sign on my door that says "If you're selling something, don't even bother unless you want my foot up your ass"

What do you think?

I got hit by a brother/sister duo the other day. Same fund raiser...two different schools. I thought that was pretty crappy. They opened the gates to my property...I prolly should have sent the dogs after them:) LOL

How about getting one of those super-soakers to run them off? ;)

Next March, I want you to come to my homeowner's association meeting. They budget $6000+ a year for 'socials'. Why the hell should I have to pay for the same people to get together? If they want to socialize, BYOB.

They wouldn't listen to me, but I have a feeling you'd scare them all. ;)
