Blizzard
07.18.04 (7:33 am)   [edit]
Thought I would share a couple of funny stories from my radio days... If you missed the earlier blogs, I used to be a radio DJ for a couple of 'the big boy' radio stations in town. I left because of the sucky money, hours, and the egos. I loved radio and continuing would make me hate it.

I got started at a 100,000 watt college station. It used to be touted as the most innovative station in the country. WRAS broke REM, Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Nirvana - I could go on and on. Nowadays, it's in the crapper.

Anyway, one of the shifts I did was Saturday's 6am - 10am. It was relatively quiet and I got to catch up on shit in the process. The studio has no windows. Your only connection with the outside world is the phone.

We were expecting some snow that a.m. (Remember the Blizzard of '93?) People started calling in saying that they had a few inches of snow, etc. Then the reports started coming in about roads being closed. By the time my shift is up, campus security came to notify me that I was stuck and wouldn't be able to get home unless I had a 4wheel drive. (I didn't)

And the guy following me couldn't get in b/c of the snow. The Program Director told me to stay on air as long as I could.

And for the next 18 hours, yes 18 hours, I stayed on the air. My theme was "Come on Down FCC, shut me down and haul me to jail". I played stuff that had dirty words and completely abandoned our format. I lived on vending machine coffee and whatever was in the machines. Someone offered to bring me food to keep me on the air. (Security won't let strangers in the studio)

I had no voice by the end of the 18 hours. But people still remember me for that b/c a lot of the other stations had shut down... They didn't understand that I was doing it really to avoid being snowed in with my mother for a couple of days! LOL

That is a very cool story. :)

Still it reminds me of a time when my family was driving down to florida in the winter. There was a big snowstorm in the south (well big for the south, maybe there was 6 inches of snow). The authorities closed the highways and my family was forced to stop at a motel. And not the kind we normally would stop in with an indoor swimming pool and maybe a video arcade. Nope, we stopped at just a regular no frills place because it was the only place that had a room. I dont remember how long we were stuck there but I remember hating it. I guess we drove our parents nuts. When the news came that the highways were open to people with fourwheel drive, snowtires, or chains, my dad just bundled us all back into the car and got back on the highway. He said that figured that the Michigan plates would make the cops think he knew what he was doing and they wouldnt stop him for not having snow tires, chains or four wheel drive. Heh.

So just curious, how much snow did it take for you to get snowed in like that? I once lived in a town in Michigan's Upper Penninsula and it took four feet of snow to shut them down. Here in southeastern michigan, it takes about 12-15 inches to shut things down.

Absolutely the same thing I would have done!

Then again, I was prone to do that on our college radio when the on-air signal was down, but the TV/Internet feed was still up.

I am an aunt because of the Blizzard of 93! How funny that you worked @WRAS, I went to school there--freshman year began in the fall of '93.

For some reason, I always thought that radio personalities made pretty good bank and had good hours.

I work at a college radio station right now and i love it there! It can be exhausting thou and my station has a major problem with people not showing up for their shows and not caring... but i love radio!

Everything shuts down with an inch of snow around here. They've even called off school when there was a threat of snow... It's usually gone by noon. But as a kid, it RULED!

When the weather forecasters even mention the "S" word, folks run to the grocery store and stock up on food. It always cracks me up. Do they REALLY think they will starve to death in a day???

That blizzard, we had over 12 inches of snow. No power for days....

I'd love to play 'classics' like "I wanna be a cowboy" to torture my sidekick when he was late and say he requested it...
