Clock or Compass?
06.18.04 (10:20 am)   [edit]
I read this the other day and it's rather prolific to me. Made me think a lot. Hope it stirs the gerbils in your brain too...

"Don't keep your eye on the clock, keep it on the compass instead."

Sometimes we (myself included) get so wrapped up in where we should be in life and comparing ourselves to others that are in our age range. Do they have a bigger house? Family? Nicer car? Better job?

It's not a matter of comparison to others, it's about OUR own journey and the destination. Keeping our head pointed in the right direction. Not losing focus or being distracted.

This causes a problem IF you don't know what direction you're heading in. This means goals. Do you REALLY know what you want from life? Do you have goals set for yourself? Do you know where you want to be in a year? In five? In twenty? What do you see yourself doing? And what are you doing, actively, to get there?

I'll post my own comments tomorrow. ;)

I think it is important to have goals, my goal is to be happy, and to make other people happy. I'm sorry about that whole atheist thing, I really don't want atheists to go to Hell because I have a lot of friends that are atheists, and I was just trying to make a joke which didn't work out okay. Sorry about that, Scuba! I hope we can still be friends.

But as far as goals, I steer towards the horizon and hope for clear skies and a gentle wind.

I am a firm believer in making your own destiny and personal responsibility. I believe I am where I am in life because of decisions I made and their consequences. With that in mind, I make decisions that steer me towards my goals.

My biggest goal? I want to enjoy life, while I'm still young. Its easy to get caught in that "work all the time for a better tomorrow". On the other hand, if you live your life by "eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die" then you will never have a future. I attempt to balance the two. I will not sacrifice my future for today's entertainment, nor will I be miserable sacrificing today for a better tomorrow.

I don't think I answered the question, but I don't care! :P

This was an awesome blog, Scuba!

I have actually put a lot of thought into this idea over the past 3 years especially...at this point I think I'm pretty well versed on what I want out of my life. I'm leaving room for some revisions, but I have been setting some goals. I have immediate (1 year goals) as well as longer term goals...they keep me going in the mornings when I wake up wondering what the fuck my life means. LOL

If you have a good compass and know how to use it well, it too will always give you a good idea of what time it is. Of course this assumes your not navigating in total darkness in the first place, but that is another homily altogether isn't it?

To tell the truth i enjoy riding the rollercoaster of life by the seat of my pants. But yet i do have goals and no i don't have goals. Its kind of weird and hard to explain but i will try. Like i want to go back to school and get a degree and end up makeing movies, music videos, or something in the media industry. But do i plan to be there in 5-6 years no. Right now i just focus on the little steps i need to do before i get to planing that out. Right now i am not even worried that i probably won't be going to school for another year, or at least not in the program i wanted to be in this fall. Right now i just want to make money to buy a car so i get to school, and make money to pay bills and pay for school. So to tell the truth i have life long goals but i only plan for the month a head not the years.

Thanks. I agree - your goals should be flexible - just like weathering a storm at sea - you just might end up changing your course as situations arise. Some people that have goals are SO focused on that one aspect that they lose sight of the big picture etc.

I'm more of a long-term thinker, myself...I believe that's just part of my make-up as a person. I've always noticed that I can see a larger picture. I don't always know exactly what all the little steps are to get there, but have learned that when I focus on a point I can find my way there...for me what works is staying focused on the long-term idea and then questioning myself along the way, "Is this something that is in any way helping to contribute to my long-term plan?" and then if it is I ask, "How do I integrate this?" The rest just sort of solves itself along the way.

As far as I'm concerned, it's worked better than I originally intended. I wasn't expecting to do a lot of the things I've done up to this point. I'm over 3 years in advance on my goal to buy a home. I think that this is applicable to most of my other personal/professional goals, as well.

Geez LT. You're going to make me have to think again, aren't you? *Turns on lightbulb*

I have never been a real "goal setter", I'm very sorry to say. I definitely see the advantage of it though. Laziness has gotten the better of me.... and distractions.... and illness... and bad choices. BUT, I'm aware of those factors now. I KNOW they hold me back. It's easier to fight the enemy if you can see him.

Now, I just need to figure out exactly what I want. That's the hard part for me.

Good blog entry! My goals are: to be a good wife and Mom. To do anything in my power to make Brian and my girls happy. Second,is to become an attorney, and eventually a judge. I'm 14 months away from taking my BAR(quit school temp. since I'm prego). In 20 yrs.,I'd like to already be a judge, have a beautiful home and be retired with my hubby out traveling. :)

I personally think that Sopheceles said it best, when asked by Ajax "What makes happiness?". To this question he replied: "Only 2 things in life will make you truely happy. 1. Figuring out what you want to do in life, and 2. Being happy doing it. Only the wisest among us succeed at both."

I was reading a book over the weekend that discussed happiness is a choice. Easier said than done, but I'm workin' on it.

Regardless of Sophocles, what makes you happy? Other than shooting things, jumping out of planes and swimming with the fishies?
