I think that is in the dictionary next to the word "oxymoron". posted by: scubadiva (reply) post date: 02.27.08 (12:38 pm) Reply to: OldSchool Some of the people in there looked like they might have spoken Latin... posted by: fractalmom (reply) post date: 02.28.08 (5:14 am) Recently, I had occasion to be at Pint's (age 8) 3rd grade classroom for the Valentine's day party. Being sick and not feeling very partyish...I just talked to them about the origins of Valentine's day. I explained about the Roman gods and the Greek gods, and told them that they probably didn't know what I was talking about, but they may have it in later grades. The teacher gave me a side look and shook her head. I just went on and talked about charioteers, again she shook her head. Then I had a bit of an epiphany and said...well, you may not get a chance to learn about any of this in regular school, there has now been SO MUCH history, that they cannot fit it all in anymore for you to learn in only 12 years. She nodded. So, yes, I do find it a bit sad really. Things we learned easily, they now do not have time to teach, because SO MUCH history and things have happened in just the last 100 years that many things we or our grandparents learned as a child, our children won't have time to cover in school. |
