Me as a roofer?
06.02.06 (12:09 pm)   [edit]

Consider me a roofer.... Doctor says I have shingles... Told me to stay in bed until the fever breaks. A friend said I was vitamin-deficient - told me about how people on ships for long times would get shingles. Told him he was a dumbass, that he was thinking of scurvy. LOL

I came down with a case of chicken pox when I was 16. The week before school was getting out my Junior year. I had these 'spots' on my torso during school, but didn't want to show them to my mother because I was having a party that night (with the mom's approval). Someone mentioned I might have C.P. - checked with all the girls sleeping over to make sure they had all had it before they came over.

Saturday morning, post-fiesta, I took a long hot shower. When I got out, I looked like I had gotten in a fight with a red marker. They had literally exploded on me.

Turns out 'the mom' hadn't had Chicken Pox. I had a really bad case and ended up in the hospital. But before I went to the hospital, I remember 'the mom' taking care of me wearing a mask and rubber gloves. (She never got them).

All my chicken-pox exposed friends were out of town at camp except one, so I spent waaaaay too much quality time with Rebecca. She was one of those that it was best to spend small doses of time with. She amused herself by playing 'connect the chicken pox' on me - trying to spell out her name, designs, etc. There were times when I was pleading for "No more Rebecca, please!" So the mom took me to the Drive-in. Was pretty darn funny with her sitting in the car at the movie, her still wearing gloves and a mask...

The mom was fanatical about me not ending up with scars from the pox, so she duct-taped kitchen mitts to my hands. (I could still itch). Then she'd chase me with Vitamin E oil... I have one small scar on my face and one under one of my boobs. Pretty amazing considering how many I had...

I had shingles once. Sure do feel sorry for you. Seems like I remember it taking forever to heal. Well, I guess that is all I have to say about that.

Between my ass peeling from a sunburn and the lovely remanants of the blisters, I'm a sight for the blind. Definitely not fun. I highly recommend some other viral infection over this. (Not that I want to try any others out to compare)

Ouch! Be careful and take care of yourself, I hear shingles can be nasty for adults. Funny you mention pox scars, I have a lovely one right between my eyes on the top of the bridge of my nose. It's amazing how many people I've encountered with the same scar!

It hurts. I turned down the pain meds the doc offered because I'm allergic to all the 'good' pain meds, Motrin 800 isn't worth waiting at the pharmacy. Last night was rough - and I have a high pain tolerance.

I think it's a pre-requisite to have one pox scar right between the eyes!

Hope it doesn't last too long. Lousy deal. Wonder why they're called shingles?

I have a chicken pox scar there, too!

I got the chicken pox when I was seven, and I don't remember much about them...I do have some scarring on my right boob to remind me that I got them at some point! How long do shingles last?? Are they really uncomfortable?? Are you feverish?? What is going on??

From what I've read, the duration and severity depends on how quickly the individual is put on antiviral medication. (Like 2 visits to the ER a 10 and 7 days ago...) Says it can last up to a month with aftereffects of pain lasting indefinitely. It says to avoid peanuts and chocolate - safe there since I hate chocolate and no penises, oppps, I meant peanuts in the house. (I still have a sense of humor)

Consistently running a fever of 100.5 on Tylenol. It hurts - can't get comfortable. It's a deep stabbing/shooting pain. Hard to describe. Nighttime seems to be the worst.

I'm chock full of information from reading up on it.

" The name shingles is believed to come from the Latin word "cingulum," which means belt or girdle, because shingles typically has a belt-like appearance."

Anything else I can look up on ask (dot)com for you?

I too have become very sensitive to any pain meds. I've been allergic to Morephine for a good many years and anything else that will work for 'real' pain makes me "speed" so bad it's easier to deal with the pain.

Darvocet, Percocet make me itch like crazy. Codeine makes me break out in hives and my throat started closing up. Morphine makes me itch but I'm in a such a fog that I don't care. Ditto with demerol and vicodin.

Geesh, I sound like a junkie. But I've had 8 bad sprained ankles and a bunch of surgeries, so I'm sorta familar with the routine...

I think the 'itching' is pretty typical for all those 'codone' drugs, or that's what a nurse friend told me once. I have that prob too but also can't sleep and just feel like crap. I dunno how people become addicted to them, they obviously get a much better high than we do, huh?
