Impact

I'm not a particular fan of Nicolas Cage - I can't think of anything of his that I've liked since say "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" or "Valley Girl". But I watched "Adaptation" yesterday. It really resonated with me. (Not Nic Cage in particular - but several of the lines from his character.) So much so that I want to watch it again... Some nuggets that make me reflect on some stuff that I really need to right now.

Anyone else had a movie speak to them that made a prolific impact on their outlook?

BTW - Thanks to ProducerBoy for the call last night. No matter how shitty things are, he ALWAYS makes me laugh. We get into the oddest discussions. Somehow we ended up talking about Neil Diamond and how I wanted to see ProducerBoy on stage doing Neil Diamond covers in a navy blue velvet jumpsuit with a white silk shirt with a big collar and pouffy sleeves.

you know, i always like n cage--but recently i thought about the guy, and realized i hadnt enjoyed one of his flix for something like 10 years.

ive always loved raising arizona, wild at heart. i thought he was great in leaving las vegas, and hilarious in peggy sue got married. fast times, too.

but the guy was also in one of my favorite movies of all time: rumble fish. he has only a small part (it's an old movie and he looks like a baby) but good. great movie.

anyway, adaptation: between cage and streep, i thought the acting was excellent--though i thought the movie fizzled a bit at the end. still, there were a couple of lines that should have been cheesy but somehow came off pretty strong, like that exchange between bros at the end, where tight-ass cage says "i was so embarrassed for you. how can you say you still love her after all the mean things she said?" and then easy-going cage says, "no one can tell me who to love."

why wasnt that line as cheesy as it should have been? i'm not sure. but it always bothers me when a piece of wisdom like that should be so frickin obvious, and yet it isnt.

anyway, as far as recent big name films that have affected my outlook, i'll go with big fish.

there's something about the way that the movie acknowledges the flexibility of reality and truth and fact that really gets me going.

how much of our lives do we make up? if we make up much of our lives, why not make our lives better?

tbt

It's nice having friends that can make you laugh. I say you should talk to him more.

Bead,
Unfortunately, Producerboy is a mega-musical genuis producer and has very little free time. I think his wife and daughter come first. (Why, I have NO idea! Kidding!)

Do you have anyone that you have utterly bizarre convos with that go off on the strangest tangents?

It's a strange one, but one of my all time favorite movies, and one that comes to mind at least once a week is "Defending Your Life" with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. I identify with the way Brook's character feels as he sits there watching snippets from his life. Plus, the premise is so refreshing and clever that it just "works" for me.
