Herbie and Foo-Foo
07.18.05 (6:14 am)   [edit]
Yesterday I had the energy of a limp noodle. So I plopped myself down outside in the lounge chair with a book and my tunes and a glass of iced green tea.

I thought I saw a large bee pollinating a flower out of the corner of my eye, but realized it was a hummingbird. Then it flew right in front of me - had I reached out, I could have touched it - it stayed there for about 5 seconds and took off.

It was cool - seeing his little legs. They looked particularly scrawny. I could hear the flutter of his wings and feel the breeze against my face.

I named him Herbie the Hummingbird. He visited me three more times yesterday.

Then, I heard a scuffle and a large screech. Sassy had something in the yard.

I thought "Oh shit! Alvin! (the chipmunk)" I jump up and go chasing Sassy. Turns out it was a small bunny. She didn't have it but she was in fast pursuit of it. It was trying to make it under the fence, but it was going so fast that it didn't quite make it the first time, so it looped around and made it under the 2nd time. I hope Little Bunny Foo-Foo is ok.

So much nature in your yard! I love it when the bunnies used to come into my back yard to eat the weeds... now I have grass, so they don't come visit anymore :(

those h-birds are great!! I watch for hawks and falcons in Manhattan. You wouldn't believe how many there are these days...with a steady food supply: pigeons!

I purposely don't edge in certain areas to leave the taller tender grass available for their munching. I hate mowing (for a multitude of reasons) but esp because the cats love to go into 'jungle cat mode' lurking thru the Saharan Grasses. (heeehee)

Sassy had the bunny cornered at one point to when it screeched - had I not called out to her, I bet she would have had it - but it was almost as big as she was...

A few years ago, there was a baby bunny that both cats were chasing in the back yard. They didn't want to hurt it - they just liked chasing it. (I caught it and held it for a while to calm the little critter down) I think I have pics of it in my photobucket.

:( I know it's the food chain and all...still makes me sad when any critter (except roaches and mosquitos and ants and that possum that stalks us) gets killed.

Feeling Herbie's wings blow air on me and hearing the flutter was uber-cool.

I had to do my yard today *maternal invasion tomorrow. So what's worse than a limp noodle?

Hope at least you are doing better.

I would love to catch a picture of Herbie, but having my camera with me - he's so quick, would be a miracle. And it's not like I can ask him to stand still...

Don't you love it when people think you're hallucinating? (At least it wasn't an evil monkey in your closet!)

And I bet the baby coons were cute...

Lulu and Sassy are totally not interested in Herbie. He'll be at the feeder, not 2 feet away from them (sleeping) they will casually glance over and go back to sleep. I figure he's too small to be an appetizer and not worth the trouble considering his speed.

I love seeing all the hummingbirds at the feeder. I feed mine a sugar water solution.
