Another Rant
07.12.05 (9:23 am)   [edit]
I've got a rant. If I offend anyone, perhaps I'm talking to you. (haha)

Topic:
Self-check out lanes at the grocery store or other retail establishment.

Case example:
This morning.

Subject:
Yours truly went in to the grocery store to buy a few containers of seltzer water and yogurt.

Scene:
4 stations to check out. LARGE sign overhead and at each station saying "10 items or less".
Station A: Woman with cart of more than 30 or so items in no sort of rush at all.
Station B: Older man struggling to use bifocals to find UPC code, get it to scan and then studies screen to confirm price is correct.
Station C: Another woman that can't figure out where the upc code is on anything. She keeps walking over to the Wizard of Self-Scan employee asking for help.
Station D: Two teenage girls around 14 giggling and gaggling while scanning stuff. They realize they don't have enough money.

There are 4 others (plus myself) waiting to check out.

Station A has a bunch of flowers. Must do price check.
Station B starts complaining because the price ringing up wasn't the advertised price. Wizard of self-scan tells him he has to use his "Kroger card" to get that price. He starts bitching. I walk over and offer my card to get it moving along. He grumbles. (I'm assuming it was a grumble of gratitude but I doubt it)
Station C: Decides to pay by check. She starts filling it out. (The store has automated systems to actually do it for you but she won't let them do it)
Station D: debating about what items to send back

The moans and groans behind me as the line continues to grow.

Station A gets price, starts complaining, but moves ahead with completing purchase. Then she whips out her checkbook as well.
Station B starts to pay by cash. The system says to insert change first. He was apparently going to pay the $17 tab with a $5 bill and $12 in change. But he put the $5 in first. This led to Wizard of Self-Scan having to intervene.
Station D: still debating and talking about the CosmoGirl cover.

I think we, as a crowd, are ready to collectively revolt and strangle these people.
Of course, we all *thought* we'd be able to run thru Self-scan in no time. There was only one check out lane open otherwise and those folks had tons of stuff in their carts.

Remind me never to get a job as a Wizard of Self-Scan, as I would have choked each of these people. When there is a line, there seems to be an immediate attraction for idiots to decide to use them. I believe that they need to make you prove you are saavy enough to use the self-scan thru a proficiency test before being granted access to use them during peak traffic times. As well as reminding them that if they show up with more than 10 items, they will be electrocuted on the 11th item.

I feel much better now. Thank you.

I think your rant should be posted, or blared from loudspeakers, in front of every self-checkout lane. In general, I like them when I just need a few things. I tend to pay with my Visa because it moves things quickly.

Ahhh! On your behalf.

Add to that, people that purchase SUV's need to prove that they can drive and park it between the two lines.

Maybe we can come up with something to print out on cards and hand out to offenders...?

oh, I just love that idea. Maybe we should write a book " self scanning for dummies"!!!!

Wow, they do that over there? I don't think Australia trusts its citizens enough. Either that, or Australia's citizens are too lazy to do it themselves, heh.

Actually, they have cameras overhead to monitor customer's actions and the area where you put the scanned items into the bag are on a scale and if the scanned item's weight doesn't mesh with what is put in the bag, it alerts the Wizard of Self-Scan.

Usually, it's much faster than going thru the express lane check out if you have a couple of items.

Walmart has them now too. I'm sure it will make it around to you Aussies eventually.

In your situation, I believe it's just a matter of Natural Selection. ;)

Self-scanning and the inability to park SUV's is just making the rest of us into 'victims'.

Give me a bullwhip and a bullhorn. I'll get those people into shape.

I purposely do not go to the grocery store on Wednesday's because it's Geezer Day (aka Senior 5% discount day). The store is crammed with old folks. I'm not even going to start on that rant.

Nah - they don't realize they are idiots. That's the problem. It ain't rocket science by any means. I have a feeling that if you won't use an ATM card, you sure as hell don't need to be trying to figure out this advanced techno-self-scanning magic stuff.

(I can see my mother being one of those idiots herself. I'll have to ask her if she's used it next time I talk to her. She doesn't believe in ATMs...)

Like they have the express line and "Senior's Day" where they get the 5% discount, they should have a Senior's Line because they seem to move like molasses.

The selfcheckouts have just showed up in stores w/in the past yr or so...however, we don't have item limits at stores (not that I've seen), which is silly. Many times I'm stuck behind someone at Walmart, in the self check, w/ a crammed full cart. And I have 2 bottled drinks, a box of cereal & some cosmetic item. Gah!

OH! And my big beef w/ the selfcheck is that it wants you to you put everything in the bag & you can only hit "skip bagging" so many times b4 the thing freezes up & needs the Self Check Wizard override. BAH!

I'm not familiar with the 'skip bagging' option. Then again, I don't do Walmart very often. When I do, it's usually for cat litter - I get 4 bags of it - better to leave it in the cart.
